Betweenstrap is the way I work, not the name of a project.

Whether I am photographing a prehistoric reconstruction, a landscape, a model, a sculpture or a virtual world, I start in much the same way. I spend time with the subject before I think about the photograph. I walk, I look, I come back, sometimes for a few days, sometimes over several years.

Photography is only one part of that process. Carrying a large-format camera over a mountain path, returning to the same cemetery year after year, working repeatedly with the same models, or walking through a virtual landscape, all of it asks for the same kind of attention. The medium changes; the experience stays oddly similar.

I have never been interested in keeping separate bodies of work. Everything gathered here grew out of the same practice, building simple situations, accepting uncertainty, letting each place, body or material reveal itself in its own time.

Betweenstrap pulls these experiences together. What connects them is not the subject or the technique, but the time spent looking before the photograph gets made.
