Imagined Territories - American Imaginaries

America may be one of the most photographed places on earth. Yet a lot of what we recognise as “America” exists first as an image.
Cities, highways, deserts, forests and abandoned towns circulate through cinema, literature, photography and video games, slowly building a shared visual memory that often arrives before any direct experience of the place.
Photographed entirely inside virtual environments, these landscapes are treated as real places. Every image is made from a walking body's eye level, with no impossible viewpoints or aerial shots. The photographic act stays grounded, keeping the physical relationship between observer and landscape intact.
Rendered in black and white, these environments shake off their digital origin. They stop illustrating a game and start revealing an imagined territory where fiction and collective memory overlap. Rather than document the United States, American Imaginaries asks how a culture builds its own landscapes, and how photography can, in turn, turn those fictions into believable places.
